So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast” (4:4-6). The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. “And Abel also brought an offering-fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. As the story continues the brothers bring sacrificial offerings to God which they take from their own work, Abel becomes a pastoralist, a person who is a keeper of sheep and goats. Cain becomes an agriculturalist whose responsibility it is to till the soil. In the span of just a single verse, readers learn that when the two boys grow up they pursue different paths: “Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil” (4:2). She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.” (4:1-3) “Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.
